Up next for a 'Whiskey Write Up', I've gone for one of my favourites, The Liberator Single Malt Tawny Port Finish from Wayward Irish Spirits.
I'm a big fan of Port Finished whiskey, so when this inaugural release dropped I was excited to try it. It's an absolutely delightful, full bodied drop.. one of the best Port Cask finishes I've ever tried.
Roll on a few months, and I was lucky enough to win a bottle in an Instagram competition (always enter those competitions!!) instantly cracking it open. This one is a collector’s piece essentially, but I think whiskey was made to be enjoyed!⠀
This Single Malt is Ireland's first Vatted Malt, made up of 2 Single Malts from different distilleries. Initially matured in first fill American ex-Bourbon casks, then finished for nine months in fresh ex-Tawny Port casks. The components are 22% 2006 Cooley Single Malt and 78% 2015 Great Northern Distillery Single Malt. The younger Whiskey was finished in really fresh Tawny Port casks for between 9 & 12 months. The Tawny Port finish makes it so intense, rich and very complex. With usual Port Finish notes of figs, and apple and pear on the nose. A rich cocoa taste with a little clove following into a beautifully warm long finish.⠀
⠀
Fantastic Whiskey, decent price point too (around €65)! Definitely one to try.⠀
ABV 46% | 70cl⠀⠀⠀
Tasting Notes:
Nose: The Tawny Port finish contributes intensity, richness and complexity with layers of fig, apple and pear on the nose.
Palate: Rich tastes of cocoa, clove and blackcurrant. Fruity with some mild pepper notes.
Finish: A very long warming finish.
