This World Photography Day (Monday 19 August), leading photo printing specialist CEWE (see-wee) is inviting Irish photographers of all levels to enter the global CEWE Photo Award competition.
The CEWE Photo Award is the world’s biggest free photography competition, open to amateur and professional photographers alike, and typically attracting half a million entries each year. This year’s competition carries the theme ‘Our world is beautiful’.
The growing appeal of the CEWE Photo Award is reflected by the surge in photography in everyday life, with an estimated 4.9 photos now captured by the average European every day. Smartphone technology has made it possible for anyone to become a photographer, and the vast majority of photos (94%) are now taken on smartphones.
Here in Ireland, meanwhile, a massive 43% of people have admitted their dream career is to become a semi-professional or professional photographer.
Current CEWE Photo Award entries taken in Ireland: ‘The Forest’ captured by Tsung Ho Lam, ‘Horse Man’ taken at the 2023 Ploughing Championships by Martin Whyte, and ‘Cliffs of Moher - foggy morning’ captured by Piotr Machowczyk (@machowczykpiotr).
Steve Manfield, Marketing Director CEWE Ireland, is hoping that World Photography Day, which was first celebrated in 1991 and has become an annual celebration of the art of photography, will inspire people to enter this year’s CEWE Photo Award.
“World Photography Day is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge how important photography is in our daily lives”, said Mr Manfield. “At CEWE, we’re passionate about celebrating those special moments we capture on our cameras or smart devices, and recognising the joy these photos bring to ourselves and our loved ones throughout the year."
“To mark the special day, we’re calling on all Irish photographers to enter the CEWE Photo Award via our website or mobile app,” Mr Manfield said. “It’s free to enter and you’ll be in with a chance to win, no matter what your level!”
The CEWE Photo Award 2025 features 10 different categories, with entrants free to submit multiple photos in each category. The competition, which has an overall prizefund of €250,000, will remain open until April 2025.
