Currys PC World asked Colin Baker from Back from the Future, aka The Gadget Guy, for his advice when buying a laptop for educational needs.
Colin said “Look, your laptop is going to be either your best friend or your worst enemy. One thing’s for sure, you’re going to be spending a LOT of time with it and depending on it through thick and thin, whatever school, college or course you’re embarking on. Making the right choice now will save on Kleenex in the future.”
Colin’s tips:
The right decision making process:
• Budget: There’s no point in saying you want to single handedly design the next Airbus with four hundred euro in your hand. Balance the features you need for course work with your budget. You might have to make some compromises, so make sure to prioritise needs over wants. Once you decide the maximum you can afford, blinker yourself to that budget.
• Size: With regard to size, consider the course you’re doing. Smaller machines mean smaller keyboards and smaller screens. There’s no way around it. However, there’s no point in bending your spine carting a half tonne gaming machine in and out of college, to simply write assignments. If portability is a priority, look for laptops that have a 14" or smaller screen and weigh under 2kg.
• Appearance: Don’t be TOO laser focussed on appearance. Look at the processor, the RAM and the drive/storage size first. If it looks good too, that’s a bonus.
3 different students, 3 different laptops.
ACER Aspire 15.6” Laptop– 615497 - NOW €679 / Save €100
The mobile mainstream student:
This covers the majority of students in Ireland. They move about a fair bit, need to write assignments like there is literally no tomorrow and want to do so wherever they find decent coffee. The Acer Aspire 14” is slim and light but still boasts a 14” HD screen and a 10 hour battery life along with a decent mid-stream spec of an i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.
LENOVO IdeaPad 14” Chromebook– 788932 - NOW €279 /Save €50
The budget is tight but it’s got to be right:
If you’re budget is lower than €500 and you are a Google fan like me, (Google docs and apps absolutely rule FYI) you’ll get a lot more for your money with a Chromebook. This is NOT a windows laptop it runs Chrome and all that Google offer therein. My favourite model is the LeNovo Ideapad 3i 14” Chromebook which comes in under €400 blips. Instant start up and constantly backed up to the cloud, it makes life a LOT easier.
Dell XPS 15.6” Laptop– 628074 - NOW €2079 / Save €300
The architect/gamer/designer/video and media pro:
There’s a big distinction in computer users between those carving up complicated designs, videos and media and the rest of us who effectively use our laptops for browsing, email, documents, communicating and entertainment. In terms of high-performance laptops, Dell’s 15” XPS models area really shining right now with their most popular model running an i7 processor and the super graphics card, NVIDIA’s RTX305ti. That is the throbbing heart of this machine that works the graphics magic and simply does not come with mere mortal machines.
