World Radio Day celebrates the radio as a way of educating people, providing information and promoting freedom of expression across the world! In Ireland, A morse code transmission on 24 April 1916 from the GPO in Dublin by the rebels during the Easter Rising is considered the first broadcast in Ireland. Regular radio broadcasting in Ireland began with 2RN's test transmissions in 1925 (now RTE Radio 1). Commercial radio was only legalised in Ireland in 1989, and so Irish radio in the 80's was dominated by pirate stations which were unlicensed, illegal and hugely popular. Nowadays, there are many stations to choose from in Ireland, with over 3 million people here tuning into radio on a daily basis, according to the latest figures from JNLR.
